This vacation features all the best that Alaska has to offer in the winter. You witness firsthand the start of the last great race, view the northern lights from the comfort of natural hot springs, and watch artisans craft beautiful sculptures out of massive blocks of ice. All of this while having the services of a full-time Knightly Tours escort.

Day 1 – Arrive Anchorage

Upon arrival transfer to your downtown hotel and meet your escort. Your hotel is centrally located in the heart of downtown Anchorage and will put you very close all the activities. Your escort will brief you on all activities over the next few days.

This will be your home base for the next five days.

Day 2 – Anchorage City Tour and Mushers’ Banquet

This morning begins with a Welcome Breakfast, where ou will meet your fellow travelers. After this enjoy a short tour of the city of Anchorage showing all the highlights of the downtown area. This will leave the afternoon free to explore Alaska’s largest city.

This evening you will attend the Musher’s Banquet. The Iditarod Musher’s Banquet is the first major celebration of this great race. Meet all the Iditarod dog musher’s and more. During the fun filled evening, you will enjoy the camaraderie and good times before the mushers head out on the grueling 1,100 mile journey to Nome. Return transfer will be arranged by your escort.

Day 3 – Iditarod Learning

Today you focus on learning about the ‘Last Great Race”. After breakfast you and your escort are transferred to the Lakefront Hotel “Race Headquarters” where we will attend three talks on the race. These talks will inform you about what life is like on the Iditarod Trail, what goes on behind the scenes to make this race happen and one of the most fascinating presentations is on the subject of the care and training of the athletes in this race (the dogs).

Day 4 – Ceremonial Race Start and leisure time.

After breakfast at your leisure, you head to 4th Avenue for the ceremonial Iditarod Race start, where thousands of fans and world wide media will assemble to cheer on the musher’s. The main street is blocked off and transformed into a sled dog track. Hundreds of cheering spectators line the street the morning of the race to watch the preparation and start of the Iditarod and you are in the heart of it.

The balance of the day and evening are yours to enjoy Anchorage.

Day 5 – Official Race start

This morning enjoy some free time after breakfast. You then will depart for the town of Willow. Today the race to Nome begins for real, with the official re-start at Willow. Mushers will hookup their dogs and race across more than 1,000 miles of Alaska’s wilderness. You will have a far better, closer look at the teams and mushers.

Day 6 – Flight to Fairbanks and visit the Ice Carving competition

Today after breakfast you are transferred to the Anchorage airport for your short 15 min. flight to Fairbanks. Weather permitting we may get a glimpse of Denali (formerly Mount McKinley).

Upon arrival you transfer to our hotel located on the Chena River and just minutes from the airport. It offers all the amenities for a comfortable, relaxing stay.

Once you settle into the hotel, your escort will arrange transfers to the annual Ice Carving competition located at Pioneer Park. Since 1990, this month-long ice carving competition draws and features over 100 ice carvers from over 20 countries, making it one of the largest annual ice art competitions and exhibitions in the world. The World Ice Art Championships showcase over one hundred competition and exhibition pieces.

Day 7 – Tour and transfer to Chena Hot Springs Resort

After breakfast this morning your driver will introduce you to the “Golden Heart City” as you tour to Chena Hot Springs Resort. As you head north a stop will be made at the Trans Alaska pipeline.

You then travel the picturesque Chena Hot Springs Road, following the Chena River for most of the 60 scenic miles to the historic Chena Hot Springs Resort, the most accessible and developed hot spring resort in Alaska’s Interior.

To enjoy nature and see the Aurora Borealis up close, an Aurora Viewing Snow Coach Tour is included with your vacation package. This late night trip departs the Chena Activity Center and takes you to the top of a hill to a heated Mongolian Yurt tent and views of the amazing Northern Lights, the natural light displays in the sky.

This will be your home for two nights.

Day 8 – Full day at the resort

The area is noted as one of the best areas in North America to view the northern lights. In addition to the Aurora Viewing Tour, your stay will include unlimited use of the natural hot springs pools both indoor and outdoor, and will include a visit to the Ice Museum.

You may also partake in many other optional activities that you and your escort will be able to schedule.

Day 9 – Return to Fairbanks and enjoy a Farewell Dinner

After breakfast this morning you have time to enjoy some optional activities or the beautiful hot springs. At midday you will transfer back to Fairbanks. You’ll have the afternoon free to explore on your own and your escort will have many suggestions as to what you may partake in.

The evening ends with your new friends and your escort sharing dinner and reliving the memories of the past few days.

Day 10 – Homeward bound

Enjoy breakfast this morning before your transfer to the airport for your onward journey home.
